LIL MAMA

“VYP: Voice of the Young People”: C

If 17-year-old Lil Mama is in fact the voice of the young people - as she repeatedly claims here on her debut album - then the young people are loud and obnoxious. The record is a painful mash-up of cringe-worthy beats, Lil Mama’s abrasive delivery and a song devoted to lip gloss. To her credit, the singer-rapper writes her own material, displays admirable self-confidence and tackles some weighty topics many artists wouldn’t touch. Unfortunately, that doesn’t add up to much worth listening to. Download: “Shawty Get Loose.”
